My last job was in a factory bottling pharmaceutical medication. I often hear how people claim that working someone on the Autism Spectrum working in a factory is not possible so I thought I would talk about my experience.
First off, I think I should describe the environment that I worked in. I worked in an area that was lit by fluorescent lighting, had very noisy machines which gave a lot of repeated noises and as it was third shift, general social rules often went out the window.
As many people know fluorescent lighting and and Autistic People often do not get along. I’m one of those people. Instead of switching my home to Fluorescent lighting, I’m going to all LED. So how did I cope with fluorescent lighting - I took my breaks in darker areas of the building, and I often took bathroom breaks and would walk into a dark bathroom.
As far as the repeated noises, I would wear hearing protection in non-required areas.
As far as the social aspect, I failed miserably. I think this is what really got me laid off.
